Surma A small tribe that lives in southern Ethiopia, whose geographic isolation has permitted the people to maintain its traditional customs. For their ceremonies, the Surma paint their bodies with sophisticated designs of sinuous lines, principally in white. The photographs are by Carol Beckwith and Angela Fisher, who have carried out extensive anthropological investigations in the 30 years that they have chronicled ceremonies throughout Africa.
