The Selknam lived in southern Patagonia, where they evoked their community spirits in a ceremony called Hain, at which they circulated nude in the snow with colorful masks, their bodies painted with striking designs. These extraordinary photographs were taken in 1923 by a German priest and anthropologist, Martin Gusinde, who attended one of the last ceremonies before the Selknams’ extinction.
