The native peoples of this Pacific archipelago were rediscovered in the early 1900s. Their traditional art has since been the subject of wonder, thanks to its originality and the intensity of its creations and body ardornments. Integration with the West, nevertheless, has brought about changes in ceremonial rituals. English photographer Su Garfinkle (London, 1950) rescues part of the splendor of the cultures, as well as documentation of the gradual loss of their cultural identify.
